POSITION: Managing Director
DESCRIPTION: 4th Wall Theatre Company is accepting resumes for the position of Managing Director.
4th Wall Theatre is a professional, not-for-profit, Equity theatre, producing in a 99-seat converted black box in Houston's historic First Ward.
FY2017's annual operating budget was $243,000; it is projected at $421,000 in FY2019. 4th Wall's annual program includes four main stage productions.
Currently 4th Wall is run entirely by the Founding/Artistic Directors, Kim Tobin-Lehl and Philip Lehl, with consulting and contract help in bookkeeping and marketing.
Our mission is "to develop and support theatrical artists by aiming to pay a living wage, in order to grow and sustain the community of professional theatrical artists in Houston, TX; and to develop and promote the highest aesthetic of acting that is truthful, by producing exciting, cutting-edge, live theatre."
4th Wall boasts a growing subscriber base, and has received numerous local theatre awards and nominations. We are firmly rooted in our community and consider our relationship with our patrons personal and intimate. We seek to bring the audience into the theatrical experience with "Extraordinary Performances. Up Close."
The Managing Director has overall responsibility for financial planning, budgeting, fundraising, marketing, accounting, human resources, community relations, strategic planning and board relations. The MD works as part of a highly collaborative three-member team that includes the Founding/Artistic Directors, and will report directly to the Board of Directors. The MD is responsible for the growth and financial sustainability of 4th Wall, and must embrace an integrated and innovative artistic and business focus. 4th Wall Theatre has undergone tremendous growth in the past seven years; the new Managing Director will both manage this growth and build upon it, implementing a new development strategy, and creating and implementing a new strategic plan.
QUALITIES AND SKILLS
The Managing Director will excel at strategic thinking while managing the big picture and paying close attention to details. The Managing Director should be a team player, helping to motivate colleagues, patrons and the community around the institution's mission, vision, and goals. The selected individual will have a proven track record and possess exceptional organizational, fundraising, management and communication skills. The MD should have a desire to work in close contact with internal stakeholders.
The selected candidate should also demonstrate the following competencies:
The successful candidate will have a minimum 5 years of senior management experience, particularly in maximizing revenue and mobilizing human and financial resources. Qualified applicants will have an advanced degree in Arts or Theatre Management or equivalent experience in the performing arts. Preferred proficiency in Salesforce or CRM databases, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Suite and MAC; website knowledge is a plus.
