Saturday, March 4th at 10:00 pm, Luis Galindo will host The Not Silent Majority - Poetry Slam featuring some of Houston's best female slam poets.
Jasminne Mendez is an award winning author, performance poet and educator. She received her B.A. in English Literature and her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston. Mendez has had poetry and memoir published both nationally and internationally and her first multi-genre memoir Island of Dreams was published by Floricanto Press was awarded Best Young Adult Latino Focused Book by the International Latino Book Awards in 2015. Recently, her personal essay El Corte received honorable mention in the Barry Lopez Creative Non-Fiction Prize in CutThroat, A Journal of the Arts and was published in the Best of CutThroat. She is a 2016 VONA Alumni and a Macondo Fellow and she is an MFA candidate in the creative writing program at the Rainier Writer's Workshop at Pacific Lutheran University. She was recently published in and has work forthcoming in The Acentos Review, The Crabcreek Review, and Label Me Latino/a.
Rain is a published author, national slam poet/spoken word artist, playwright and actress.
Her recent and most notable accolade is a Super Bowl commercial that she performed built around a poem that she wrote for KHOU Channel 11.
The commercial also earned airtime during the Grammys.
This poem won the 2016 Eye on Excellence Award as well as a nomination for the Lone Star State Emmys.

She was recently selected as one of six artists to perform a private show for R. Kelly.
She was "Artist of the Month" in Dialogue Magazine.
She has performed at the 5th annual event of the Redefinition Experience at the Ensemble Theatre.
She is the proprietor of "RAW EMOTIONS ENTERTAINMENT".

Shanie The Poet is a mother of two born on November 16, 1977 in Woodbury, NJ and raised in Detroit. She began sharing her gift of poetry with the world at the tender age of 11 and hails as the Original Sunshine Princess of Poetry. She has performed at various venues in Texas, Louisiana, Michigan and is steady going abroad. Her artistry has been featured on Yung-Ro's, The Counselor CD, numerous charitable events and expanded into her book "Telling Secrets Since Birth". Refusing to allow any to place her in a box she ventured into to the acting world and has been in plays such as Karma, The scarlet letter, Millennium women of color and The Millicent Bradford adoption Story as well as the movie Love is … due to release 2015.Shanie started a line of note cards and paintings under the name of "You Are Poetry" as well as a plus sized line of shirts and purses called Poetically THICK. Shanie is a plus sized model, spokesperson for March of Dimes, "Go before you show" and an internet radio personality on "Grow you mind and money" which airs on oldgrumpyradio. There's no way to block her shine... Shanie resides in Houston with her family.
Roses is an artist that fully believes that it only takes one person to change the world, in her professional career as Project Lead she is a mentor in the graduate student program where she often trains, coaches and speaks in the areas of leadership, entrepreneurship and creative presentation. Her mission is to empower a generation of creative leaders through her personal and professional experiences. Also a passionate artist Rose became a published author in 2016 with her work published in the AIPF 2016 Austin International Poetry Festival) poetry book, performed at the Art Outside Festival in Austin, TX, contributed three tracks on the "Survivor" cd (on iTunes) for the National Child Abuse project, selected to perform on the 2015 poetry tour Word Around Town (W.A.T) and collaborated on several music tracks of varied local Houston artist. Rose holds a Master's Degree in Commercial Operations and Logistics as well an Associate Degree in Journalism. Her do-it-yourself approach gives way to her creativity to be an out-of-the-box thinker. In her free time, she writes poetry, listens to old school jams and reads…a lot.
