Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike… and Cassandra and Nina!
In this wonderful world created by Christopher Durang, we meet characters who feel just a touch off-kilter, each bringing a unique charm and humor to the story. Durang himself described this play as a “blender” of Chekhov characters placed in a modern setting that reflects his own life in Pennsylvania, his love for Chekhov, and the echoes of past ‘what-ifs.’
When planning this season, this play quickly rose to the top of our list. Shortly after selecting it, we learned of Christopher Durang’s passing, and just two months before rehearsals began, we received news of Maggie Smith’s passing as well. This production, therefore, has taken on a special resonance, allowing us to honor two remarkable artists who have left indelible marks on the theatre world. Additionally, this season marks a time of change for 4th Wall Theatre, as its founders Kim Tobin-Lehl and Philip Lehl step away from their leadership roles, passing the torch to myself as Artistic Director and Catherine Dunaway as Managing Director.
At its core, VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE is a celebration of humor (and boy do we need a laugh right now), nostalgia, and the joy of reconnection—a journey of finding our way back home. While it isn’t a holiday play per se, it beautifully aligns with the spirit of this time of year, when we gather with loved ones, sometimes across divides, to celebrate and, as Nina says, “to find love.” We hope you leave the theatre tonight feeling a bit lighter, a bit more hopeful, and inspired to reconnect with those around you. We are truly grateful to have you with us.
My deepest thanks go to our incredible team—onstage and off—who bring this production to life. And to my family, Kevin and Livey, thank you for keeping things running at home. I love you all, and I feel so grateful to be here.
